Friederike Heumann

Picture of Friederike Heumann studied viola da gamba at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jordi Savall and Paolo Pandolfo, and completed her training with a soloist diploma in Early Music. Subsequently, she was a fellow at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and lived there for several years as a freelance musician.

As a soloist and as a guest of ensembles such as Hesperion XXI and Le Concert des Nations (Jordi Savall), Concerto Vocale (René Jacobs), Le Concert d´Astrée (Emmanuelle Haïm), Les Arts Florissants (William Christie), Ensemble Café Zimmermann, Le Poème Harmonique, Lucerne Festival Orchestra (Claudio Abbado), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Montréal Symphony Orchestra, and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (Kent Nagano), Bayerische Staatsoper München, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Berliner Barocksolisten, among others, she is heard throughout Europe, Canada, Brazil, Japan, the United States, and Israel.
With her own ensemble, Stylus Phantasticus, she is also a guest at many international festivals, performing instrumental music of the 17th century as well as collaborating with vocal soloists such as María Cristina Kiehr, Victor Torres, Claire Lefilliâtre, Andreas Scholl, Damien Guillon, Roberta Invernizzi, and Furio Zanasi.

Under Friederike's artistic direction, Accent has released numerous recordings, all of which have been received with great enthusiasm and many awards by international critics (Diapason d'Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, 10 de Répertoire/Classica, 5 Étoiles de Goldberg, 4 clés de Télérama ffff, etcetera ), including sonatas for viola da gamba by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, chamber music by Dietrich Buxtehude (Alpha 2004), music for two lyra-viols, the first recording of music by Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, or the solo album Il vero Orfeo: Arcangelo Corelli's op. V in arrangement and imitation.
Most recently, the CD Nostalgia - The sea of memories was released in 2020, which also received rave reviews.

Friederike Heumann was awarded 1st prize at the Premio Bonporti international competition in Rovereto with the ensemble Le Nuove Musiche.

She teaches viola da gamba and consort at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, as well as at numerous international masterclasses. In the summer semester 2020 she was appointed professor for historical ensemble practice and viola da gamba at the University of Music in Würzburg. She is a jury member at various international early music competitions.
